Pay Attention first appeared in 2012 under Lay’s historical byline, Walayee C. Whitlock. These poems grew from private journals and lived experience—pages holding family, childhood pain, love, faith, motherhood, survival, and the truths that needed somewhere to go.

This revised Slayed Beyond Beautiful edition gives those original poems a calmer, clearer place on the page. The wording, imagery, emotional meaning, and history have been preserved. Obvious spelling, punctuation, spacing, capitalization, and line-break inconsistencies have been corrected with a gentle hand.
